Paper Recycling - Basic Grades

The grade descriptions for paper recycling, as outlined by the Paper Stock Institute, comprise nearly 100 different grades of paper, many of them specialty grades generated by the commercial and industrial sectors. These guidelines are available in printed form and can be made available upon request. However, for most recycling programs for businesses, and the public in general, there are four basic grades which are normally collected and processed by recycling companies.

Market Assessment: Virgin and recycled resin prices caught in downward spiral.

October and November 2008 may go down as plastics recycling's most turbulent market period in history.

Recovered resin prices have been plummeting for about four weeks. In a normal market, prices would have fallen naturally during this period because of two factors: The price of oil dropping precipitously and a slowing economy.

  • The U.S. annually recycles 18% of all of its plastic bottles and containers and 36% of its soft drink bottles.
  • In conventional recycling, sorted plastics are chopped, washed and converted into flakes or pellets that are then processed into new products.
    Advanced recycling technologies can take plastics back to their original building blocks that are then used to create new products.
