Forestry Technician (Cruising), Technical
My duties include performing several different cruising methods that include but are not limited to 3-P and variable plot sampling. I am very familiar with using a relaskop, laser range finder, clinometer, compass, d-tape, logger's tape, and the Allegro CX hand held data recorder. I am very comfortable and confident in using all of these tools to gather data in order to obtain as accurate as possible cruise volume data. Along with the field work portion of this position, I have also had the opportunity to take the role as lead cruiser on timber sales as well. These duties include organizing and analyzing the pre-cruise data, taking this data and applying it to the sale as a whole, determining the BAF, big BAF, random number generator, number of plots, and the KZ to be applied to a timber sale. Once the sale has been cruised I determine the volume in board feet and write an appraisal to be used in the timber sale notice and contract stating the value of the sale as a whole. I have been responsible for making the cruise maps in ArcMap 9.3 for every timber sale. I am very comfortable using this software.

NRS1 Timber Sale Prep Forester
My duties in this position include, but are not limited to, the following activities that are mentioned in the next paragraph.
I had to be proficient in GPS, map reading, and compass skills. It has been necessary to be able to properly look at stereo photo pairs, both in the office and in the field, in order to establish and determine numerous features on the landscape such as: draws, streams, boundaries for cable and ground logging, road placements, landing locations, timber sale boundaries, buffer zone locations, etc.
My duties have included a number of different forest management activities ranging from all stages of forest development. I have participated in surveying stands in order to determine whether or not they are ready for a pre-commercial thinning entry. This included establishing a fixed-area plot, measuring the diameter at breast height (DBH) of all "in" trees, measuring the height of the first “in” tree, identifying the trees species, and measure the height of the first “in” tree. The last 5-years growth was measured to 1/20” and was determined using an increment borer. All this data was collected, written down, and the data was processed back at the Philomath office.
Other duties included the recon of future potential timber sales areas. While doing this, I had to determine potential road and landing locations, where cable and ground logging areas would be, and potential reserve areas. I also had to determine where all streams were located. All of this information was then drawn onto a stereo pair of photos.
My main duties involved timber sale prep work. My duties included posting area, timber sale, and patch cut boundaries. I also had to locate streams and post the appropriate buffer width. I had to mark trees to leave/wildlife trees. This involved looking at the location and the quality of the tree while considering the potential benefit to different species of birds, amphibians, and mammals. I also had to cruise the stand using variable-width plots. This involved taking the DBH and total tree height to a pre-determined diameter, as well as a count of all “in” trees. I entered cruise data for numerous stands into the SUPERAce program. The majority of my time involved field work, but preparing, proofreading, and finalizing timber sale contracts was also included as a major duty.
I am familiar with numerous computer applications including: Word, Excel, TAS, FIRS, SUPERAce, Outlook, and Access. I am very comfortable with using Arc Map 9.3 for various tasks. I have used this program to create cruising maps, exhibits for timber sale contracts, logging plans, and vicinity maps. I am confident in my ability to add, edit, and create several types of data. Some of this data includes: timber sale boundaries, streams (Type F, N, and D), roads, stream buffers, etc. I have also been using personal geodatabases to store and manage the data for each timber sale I complete.

I worked this summer on fires as engine boss, crew boss, and ICT4. I was also able to gain experience by working for the state forests division every Thursday. These duties included but were not limited to: timber sale boundary posting, the posting of fish and non-fish streams, timber cruising, patch cut boundary posting, wildlife tree marking, etc.
